Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a design conversation with Vern Yip of Vern Yip Designs and HGTV. While the discussion centered on preparing photos for publication, the ideas he provided are relevant to any home. Here are a couple elements that can easily be applied by professionals and homeowners alike.
Tip 1: Consider Function and Aesthetics in a Room
Pretty rooms don’t have to be useless and functional rooms don’t have to be ugly. Consider using furniture pieces or accessories in unconventional ways. For example, a metal wastebasket for toys, a fold-down secretary desk as a bar, or paint and posters to decorate otherwise standard shelving.
Tip 2: Add Color and Texture
Don’t be afraid to use bold colors for an entire room. When rooms use a monochromatic (one color) scheme of red or orange they can make a bold and exciting statement. Similarly, painting just the closet, or using accessories to add punch can provide just as much impact. Prefer neutrals? Use texture, whether materials or patterns, to create variety and visual interest.
